Date: June 11, 2003

Body:

The outdoor advertising industry is a partner with the Department of Homeland Security in a national public service campaign – the “Ready Campaign” – to prepare Americans for possible terrorist attacks. The industry has committed to post public service messages in various outdoor formats, valued at more than $17 million.

On June 10, 2003, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge spoke at the OAAA/TAB National Convention and Trade Show.  Here are highlights of his remarks.

“I cannot thank you enough for the unprecedented level of commitment and creativity… service and speed… responsibility and resources… that your industry has brought to this massive communications effort.

“Outdoor advertising has been critical to the success of Ready because your industry helps us reach every stretch of America – urban and rural, big city and small town.

“I know this is nothing new for you – rather part of your industry’s long tradition of coming to the aid  of  America in times of trouble – including your public service donations during WWI and WWII, as well as more than $300 million in public service messages your contribute each year.”
